Dave created the costume in Burbank California and like many Mechagodzilla costumes his was made mostly out of foam. It was built to be modular for easier transport, however it still took a truck to move it around. Dave looks out the neck and it Velcro’s together in the mid section.
This is a 4-minute clip from the Kaijucast podcast which focuses on Dave’s love of Mechagodzilla. He also talks a little about making his Mechagodzilla ’75 costume and how he took it to the premiere of Godzilla Final Wars at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Nov. 29 2004.
Back in the early 2000’s there were NO high-res images online, and getting screen caps of DVDs was not easy. So besides of just of relying on images from magazines and blurry DVDs, Dave used one of the ultimate figures to base his costume on, the Billiken 1975 Figure of Mechagodzilla. Using a figure allows you to spin it around to see the details from every single angle.
