KIRYU

Fernando Vielma's Kiryu

"In late 2021 I held a raffle for a free suit and the person who won wanted a mechagodzilla so I made a 7 foot tall Kiyu. It took me around 6 months to make it. I went to Utah to deliver the suit. We scheduled a date but I couldn't make it, a few months later I finished the suit. I wish there was more but that’s it.

Some of the materials I used: Foam core, Hot glue, Exacto knife, and Spray paint. The fished suit had a paper mache shell to keep it together in hot temperatures."

CONSTRUCTION

Arms

I made boxes that you sculpt by adding more and cutting off some pieces and the finished arms are there.

CONSTRUCTION

Legs

For the thighs they were octagons that tapered both ways and the calves are two short cylinders with two side pieces that will clamp your ankle.

CONSTRUCTION

Body

It was like making a big box then I added chest and shoulders. I made the abbs and lowered the back but i didn’t look right without the spines.

CONSTRUCTION

Dorsal Plates and Tail

I made the tail by segmenting it and putting a pool noodle through it to give it strength. Then I did the most mind boggling thing and spent the whole day making all the spines for the suit and body started taking shape and it was finished.

FINISHED COSTUME

Once I fished the suit it was too big for me to wear. I’m 5,4 and the raffle winner is 6,2 so I displayed it on the portable hanger rack.

And look, there’s a picture of me sitting next to you!
